I wanna talk about my photo box

My photo box plays an important role for my project.
The easiest way to get 10,000 portraits in Tasmania is just bringing my camera to somewhere and taking a snap shot, many friends said using the photo box just make my project harder.
But I was sure it’ going to be a key for my project.

So why the box?

Firstly: When people made up their mind to pop into this box, their attitude would already be positive. It would mean a collaboration between the person in the box and me. This action would make a better picture.

Also, I would have the same format and lighting every time I took a picture. It would produce photographs of high quality and consistency. These aspects are really important when creating a record - in fact there’s a name for this genre.
It’s called Typology Photography.
(I’ll talk about it next time.)

My photo box was a way of making this a typology photography project - to keep the portraits all the same - consistent.
The photo box also makes a strong impression on people…it’s actually a talking point. If people would say “I know him, he’s the box photographer” or “That’s that photo booth project” that was the effect I wanted to create.

I thought I could buy my ideal photo box in somewhere very easily, there are so many kind of photo equipment in the world.
I had been searching for something I want by the internet for a week but I couldn’t find anything I want.
Then I started to make the photo box by myself, my photo box journey began.
My first idea was just using a small cardboard box. I thought I could ask people to hold it, then I would take photos of them. Yes, it’s easy. I wouldn’t need any light stands or a stepladder.
But all pictures I took became just like “gibbeted head” and it’s not suitable for my happy project.

I had been taking photos of myself more than one month everyday. (Every picture of me looks grumpy because I couldn’t get good result at all)
Many people might wear glasses or hat, I have to give them even-light, I don’t want to have any ugly shadow on their faces.
The box became bigger and bigger.
Whoever came to my flat or whenever I visited my friend’s house, I asked them to pop into my photo box.
I like drawing picture but I’m not good at making any three-dimensional object.
I asked my handyman friends to help me making the photo box.
It took long time to finish making the box much more than I expected.
I finally made a satisfactory kind of photo box and officially began to take photos in the middle of June last year.
I thought this box was just temporary but I’m still using it!
And It’s still working really well!

( I wrote this text for the project page on Facebook but I’d like to share for Japanese people on my Japanese blog. I’ve never tried this before so I feel it’s quite strange,,,)
